never learned

Here are some simple things I never learned how to do properly:

  • Multiply
  • Tie my shoes
  • Swim
  • Type
  • Love

I don’t know what to do with this.

Here’s an old commercial I somehow happened upon in my browsings tonight. It’s from the year 1995, back when I was nine years old. Now, I don’t think I can say with any certainty that I’ve ever actually eaten a bowl of Cap’n Crunch. I have absolutely no consciously discernible attachment to Cap’n Crunch. I neither love it nor hate it. It holds no significance in my mind or heart, and aside from any instances in which the concept of Cap’n Crunch might be brought up by an outside source, I spend no time whatsoever thinking about it. Nevertheless, having been presented such an instance by an outside source, I figured I’d give it a look. For thirty-some seconds, why not?

As I watched, nothing struck me as immediately familiar… That was, until the one zombie in the doorway said, “PEA-NUT BUT-TER!” Suddenly the most intense shiver of electric memory ran through my body, down my arms, all the way to my finger tips. By God, did I remember the sound of that zombie saying, “PEA-NUT BUT-TER!”

To think, hidden away somewhere deep within the recesses of my brain there is a handful of neurons whose job is to simply hold on to one another and remember the way a zombie once said, “PEA-NUT BUT-TER!” in a Cap’n Crunch commercial from the year 1995… It’s absolutely incredible. There they were, sitting ever so patiently, silently. Sixteen years. They were waiting, ready to light up and scream, “Hey! Hey! Yeah! We remember that! We remember!” I can imagine them, jumping up from their little chairs in the quiet room in which they pass their time. They’re so excited they can’t help but cry a little. Holding hands, they dance around in a little circle. A memory… The most simply impressive thing in the world. “PEA-NUT BUT-TER!”
